On Tuesday 24 May, thanks to the support of the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, Open Streets will host a Gathering of Transport Minds to consider the question: Is transport tech a game changer for the planet? In the spirit of embracing low-carbon transport, we encourage all attendees to use an alternative form of transportation.
Whether you're coming to Tuesday's event or just trying to get around town, here are some apps and websites that will help you plan your route and find a ride:
Find a Lift: Join Find a Lift to create carpool groups and save money on fuel for your commutes and trips.
Findmyway: The Findmyway website makes it easy to plan a route by several bus options, including MyCiTi, the Jammie Shuttle, Golden Arrow and even Cape Town Sightseeing double deckers.
GoMetro: GoMetro is a Transit info app (iPhone and Android) aiming to improve the urban commuting experience, including real-time info, announcements and fare info.
Google Maps: Available as either a mobile app (iPhone and Android) or online, Google Maps is a great source for route planning and transport schedules anywhere in or around the city, whether you're looking to travel on foot, by bike, by train, or in a bus.
MyCiTi Trip Planner: Trying to take the bus? MyCiti can plan the trip for you, showing you timetables and the most convenient stops. Use the website's trip planner feature, or simply look up maps and times for yourself.
TCT App: Transport for Cape Town (TCT) has its own app (available for iPhone and Android), similar to Findmyway, that allows users to map routes and find timetables for Golden Arrow, MyCiti, and other low-carbon transport options.
uGoMyWay: uGoMyWay is a ridesharing and carpooling app (available for iPhone and Android) that allows you to enter your typical driving routes and then find people going to the same area. It matches you based on mutual driving patterns and even facilitates splitting the costs of fuel.
Uber: By using the Uber app (available for iPhone and Android) you can get a ride within minutes at the touch of a button. Use the app to split fare, carpool, and make use of cars that are already on the road, instead of driving your own.
Find a favorite way to ditch the car, or mix and match to get to your destination. Know of other brilliant transport apps? Let us know by dropping us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org.
