Join us for a half-day Women's Month event, to raise awareness about women's mobility and issues of gender-based violence, specifically with regards to cycling in Cape Town.
We have teamed up with Uber and Cape Town Bicycle Mayor - Lebogang Mokwena - to co-host this Women's Month celebration, with support from Bicycling Empowerment Network, Pedal Power Association, TSiBA Education and Sonke Gender Justice. We look forward to an eclectic mix of voices and lived experiences to encourage more women to ride bicycles and build a more inclusive cycling community in Cape Town.
Space is limited! Please RSVP here: https://forms.gle/qHFXNTQwt7se8CfD9
As congestion continues to steadily increase in Cape Town, there's more need and opportunity for commuters to look for alternative modes of transport, including cycling and walking where possible. The numbers of people riding a bicycle for shorter distances are increasing. Watch a short video here that introduces some of these everyday cycling champions and the concept of a 'bike bus' to make it safer to ride around the city.
However, cycling in Cape Town is not easy. This is partly due to a lack of appropriate infrastructure (e.g. cycle lanes) and road user behaviour. But as was discussed at last year's 'Women on Bikes' event, the number one barrier to increased presence of women cycling is lack of safety. Cycling alone in Cape Town proves to be risky, with adverse weather and road conditions, motorist behaviour, threat of gender-based violence and not to mention, criminal opportunists. The Mobile Women event will allow for furthering of this discussion, sharing of stories and advice between 'mobile women' and empowering more women to experience the joy of commuting by bicycle.
