Open Streets starts at your door

Posted on: Tuesday 20 March 2018
Coming to Open Streets Mitchells Plain on Sunday 25 March? Why not take the #AtoBChallenge and leave the car in the garage? We are making it easier for you to use public or non-motorised transport all the way there.

Due to popular demand, a major roadway in Mitchells Plain is set to go car-free for the third time. On Sunday 25 March, a 2.4km stretch of Eisleben Road will become a space for pedestrians and non-motorised transport users.

But how will you get there? Is there an opportunity to make the journey between A (your home) and B (Open Streets) part of the magic?

We think so. And so, on 25 March, we invite you to start your Open Streets journey the moment you step out your door: walk, cycle, take the train or the bus, or try a combination!

This, of course, carries the risks of everyday life. But we have put in place some measures to alleviate safety concerns.

For one, Metrorail has partnered with us by offering a special fare to those who take up this #AtoBChallenge. They will be setting aside an entire coach in three trains, with extra security.

The 9511 will depart platform 17 at Cape Town Station at 10h45 and arrive in Mitchells Plain at 11h36. Then, once you arrive at Mitchells Plain station, an Open Streets “walking bus” will be waiting to accompany you to Eisleben Road. A walking bus is a fun, healthy, safe and sustainable way of travelling in a group.

Alternatively, you can use a combination of Metrorail and “bike bus”. This group of cyclists will depart from Claremont at 10h00. To make it in time, take the 0107 or 0109 from Cape Town station to Claremont. They depart at 08h05 and 08h25 respectively.

Can people join the special coach at other stations en route? Yes, an access letter will be emailed to everyone who signs up which allows you access to the station, you will only have to purchase your ticket once you are on the reserved coach.

Keith Edwards, Marketing and Communications of Metrorail, says: “Metrorail is proud to be part the #AtoBChallenge and we support the initiative of more people experiencing the train as they commute to Open Streets. We are committed to the provision of safety and comfort to all #AtoBChallenge participants heading to Open Streets Mitchells Plain and commuters who rely on our service for mobility and access. This means that you are able to bring your bicycle or skateboard along to ensure you make the most of getting around.”

There are also plenty of minibus taxi routes to Mitchells Plain.

MyCiTi route D04/D03 from the Cape Town Civic Centre to Mitchells Plain departs at 11h10 and arrives at 11h59. A second MyCiTi bus departs Cape Town at 12h10 and arrives in Mitchells Plain at 12h59. Check the time table here.

And if you live close Eisleben Road, we encourage you to walk, cycle or skate to Open Streets! You can, of course, also join the walking bus.
