Carbon-dioxide emissions from burning fuels in private cars make a significant contribution to the climate change problem in Cape Town and South Africa. We can tackle this problem by shifting our transport choices; improving vehicle and fuel technologies and reducing the need for transport through spatial planning and location of facilities.
Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT) have partnered with WWF to give Capetonians the opportunity during national Transport Month to experience low-carbon transport options in our city at the upcoming Open Streets Day (30th October 2016). The A to B Challenge builds on WWF's concept of an Ecomobility Challenge, and entails teams competing to travel from the central city to Langa using any form of low carbon transport.
The Challenge
Participants will be in for a real adventure; racing from suburb to suburb across the city, completing mini challenges at each checkpoint. Teams made up of 4 people from different backgrounds will have to decide how to best travel to Open Streets Langa by choosing transport options that result in the lowest carbon emissions, without exceeding time limits and working within the rules. The winning team will be the one that manages to complete the journey with the smallest carbon footprint.
The Challenge seeks to give people an opportunity to explore transport options and interrogate the link between transport behaviour and climate change through experiential learning. It will enable those who normally don't use public transport, to experience it and those who do, an opportunity to share their experiences.
The Rules

Teams will receive an info pack with the resources they need to complete the challenge.

Each team must go to each checkpoint before they can proceed to the next one. Teams must travel together.

At least 4 different modes of transport must be used by each team - these include, MyCiti Bus, Golden Arrow Bus Service, Metrorail, mini-bus taxi, walking, cycling, and electric vehicles.

Points will be allocated according to carbon emissions, time taken to complete the challenge and small challenges.

The challenge will be filmed and a short film will be released online.

The cut off time is 14:00.
