#ItsYourSpace #CarFree #OpenStreets

Open Streets aims to create shared spaces that help bridge the social and spatial divides in Cape Town, and encourage us all to think differently about how we move around the city.

Building on the first successful Open Streets Main Road in October 2017, a second Open Streets Day is planned for Sunday 25 February 2018. We aim to take feedback and lessons learned the first time around, to further test the feasibility of a regular network of car-free streets in Cape Town.

THEME:
Coming together to create solidarity around the water crisis

ROUTE:
M4 (Main Rd, Victoria Rd, Sir Lowry Rd) between Browning Road in Observatory and Russell St in District Six
- Closure of inbound lanes only (with contraflow motorised traffic on outbound lanes) between Browning Road and Salt River Rd
- Full closure between Salt River Rd and Russell St

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Open Streets Main Road road closure shortened

Please note that we have had to amend the road closure for tomorrow’s Open Streets Main Road. On the Observatory side, the end of the road closure will now be at Browning Road, about 300m from the advertised closure point at the Cape Town Science Centre.

This is due to a last-minute instruction from the City’s Events Coordination Committee to ensure ease of vehicular access to the hospital.

It’s a disappointing development, as our detailed traffic management planning included consultation with the hospital management for precisely this purpose.

Nevertheless, this is the situation we find ourselves in and the show must go on!

We would like to make everyone taking part tomorrow aware of some of the implications of this last-minute change:

  • People taking part in the activities at the Observatory end (beyond Browning Road) will have to use the sidewalk to access them.
  • Cyclists and skateboarders will have to dismount to use the sidewalk.
  • Getting to those activities will be very hard for people with disabilities, due to the sidewalks not being universally accessible.

These challenges aside, all the positive elements you know and love about the Open Streets programme will be there.

If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us info@openstreet.co.za

WHAT IS OPEN STREETS?
Open Streets Main Road builds on a local programme inspired by Colombia’s Ciclovía. The concept is to close down a street temporarily so that it becomes car-free. It’s a chance for people to reclaim streets as public space, for walking, cycling, skating, playing, exploring and general socialising. Open Streets suspends reality and allows us to imagine a new “normal” for our streets. Watch a short video here: https://youtu.be/-IL2iv4Kkws

WHO ORGANISES IT?
Open Streets Cape Town, a citizen-driven NPO, in partnership with the City of Cape Town’s Transport and Urban Development Authority, with the financial support of the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, Millennium Trust and Woolworths, as well as the help of many volunteers, residents and friends!

WHY?
To create shared spaces that can help bridge social and spatial divides in Cape Town, and encourage people to think differently about how we move around the city
