Open Streets Mitchells Plain

On 3 April 2016, Merrydale Avenue in Mitchells Plain will become Open Streets for the first time ever!
Open Streets
Start Date
Sunday, April 3, 2016 - 12:00
End Date
Sunday, April 3, 2016 - 17:00
Venue
Merrydale Avenue (between Westpoort Dr & Oxford St), Mitchells Plain

Thanks to the support of the City of Cape Town, the next Open Streets Day will take place in Mitchells Plain on Merrydale Avenue.

What is Open Streets?

Open Streets is a worldwide movement of citizens who are reclaiming their streets as public space. During an Open Streets Day, streets are closed off to motorised transport to create a platform for community building and healthy recreational activity. Rather than being an event, Open Streets is simply a day to reimagine public life and use our streets differently. Open Streets Cape Town is a non-profit organisation working to create shared spaces that embody respect for everyone and help bridge the spatial and social divides of our city.

How can I participate?

  • Organise an activity. You could host anything from a yoga class to a street soccer match; give live drawing demonstrations or hold a poetry reading. Email info@openstreets.co.za with your idea.
  • Join the volunteer team to help make the day a success.
  • Spread the word. Open Streets depends on the community to get the word out and to make it a vibrant and fun day.
  • Come along on the day. Bring yourself, your bike, your kids, their skateboards, and all your friends to enjoy the activities, vibe and sense of community.

How much does it cost?

It's free.

How will I get there?

We encourage you to use public transport or your own steam to get to an Open Streets Day. Take a minibus taxi to Mitchells Plain Town Centre, a train to Mitchells Plain station, or a MyCiTi bus to Mitchells Plain stop.

Alternatively, you can cycle your way there with a Bicycle Cape Town bike bus.

For more information about transport and parking, click here.

What do I bring?

Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, water, a bike, skateboard, your family and all your friends.

What if it rains?

Come rain or shine; Open Streets will carry on. Bring an umbrella if you don't want to get wet.

Who do I contact about Open Streets?

Send an email to info@openstreets.co.za, or connect via our Twitter and Facebook pages.
