“Everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being;” as outlined in the RSA constitution (1996) in Chapter 2. For these well drafted Bill of Rights to be implemented everyone must play an active part, in a way that will benefit us and meet the need of the future generation.
Immediately when I recognised that there is an initiative which promotes the culture of celebrating humanity in a healthy, inclusive and diverse kind of livelihood, I knew I could not miss out. I know for a fact that as a skateboarder one of the obstacles I should skip beside pebbles, potholes and road cracks are cars on roads. However, during the Open Streets Day I am free to kickflip and manual as I navigate the street without worrying about being hit by a car.
My contentment does not only come from having the street to ourselves as non-motorists. However, I want to be certain that at least one person has been educated about keeping the environment green and they would decrease their carbon footprint after attending Open Streets.
